The Grant Road Outdoor Ice Rink shelter is scheduled to be open between December 19, 2016 and February 26, 2017. There are 2 separate ice surfaces; one boarded and the other non-boarded. Hockey sticks and pucks are not be used on the non-boarded ice rink.
The City workers are now flooding the ice surfaces more frequently to build up the thickness around the exterior of the buildings. Additional exterior benches have been ordered to provide a convenient spot to change skates when the shelter is not open.
The scheduled times for the shelter to be open with supervision are 1 to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday plus 7 to 9 pm every night of the week. The shelter will be supervised until Sunday, February 26, 2017.
Our arrangements with the City this year is to also arrange for volunteer supervisors at the Elsie Dorsey Park Outdoor Ice Rink shelter located on Castle Road. We currently have a couple of local people with a key to open it up and supervise the rink during the week and on weekends. We do not have specific hours that they work at the shelters so it will be contingent on skaters to determine if it is open.
